Pig farming, the main segment of the Italian livestock industry, mainly concentrated in the Padanian area and the basis for many renowned specialties, has for some time been affected by a number of problems made even more acute over the last two years by a combination of factors, all too familiar to industry at large, which in our case have led to enormous increases in the cost of energy, fertiliser and feed. This has been made worse by a particularly delicate and complicated health situation: on the one hand, the still latent risk of a widespread diffusion of African swine fever, and on the other, the requirements of consumers ever more focussed on environmental and animal welfare issues.

This demands that the use of antibiotics in breeding be reduced, while production technologies must be renewed and even revolutionised, and livestock farms protected against health hazards. This problem requires a quantum change in our culture and large scale investment. If farms wish to remain competitive, they must evolve in these new directions, otherwise they will find themselves left behind by the market. Will they be able to meet the challenge of the times?
